Arizona to Texas

On the long road to Marfa,Texas is the tiny ghostlike town, Valentine, with a proud little house filled with library books and a hand written note on the front window, "Be back soon."

Marfa is like stepping into a movie set from the forties. In the late afternoon it has a big noisy long train that stops smack in the middle of town for a long while. The old military buildings are a few blocks west of town where German Prisoners of war were once kept.

Seven miles beyond town are fields with overgrown landing strips, the only thing left of a once grand WWII Army Air Field built in 1942 that once had 500 planes to train pilots for war.

Valentine, Texas

Seven miles west of town, a small commemorative plaque describes this historical place.                The story of Marfa Army Airfield is in Wikipedia.
