Ashley in New England

June 1, 2013

Ashley flew to Manchester, New Hampshire from Portland, Oregon to visit and see the sights.
We had a wonderful time. Home base was Great Bay Campground near Portsmouth, NH.

The recreation room had a ping pong table but we were too busy to play.

It was sooo hot, in the 90s with high humidity, for a few days, we were drinking icy drinks a lot.

We went to the Art Museum in Manchester and enjoyed the exhibits.

The Museum owns this Frank Lloyd Wright house that we toured. The house is "Usonian", no basement, attic or garage, only a carport. The design shocked the neighbors so much in 1950; they thought it looked like a chicken coop.

Everyone on the tour was impressed by the design principles, the beauty, the ambiance of the place. This is the view from the backyard. Even though Wright designed it, he never actually saw it; he was too busy designing the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Afterward we hit the gift shop for souvenirs.

Another day we went to Portsmouth on the Atlantic coast. While looking around a historic neighborhood this nice artist invited us in to see the changes she made to her home.

We drove to Boston and parked in Charlestown, and witnessed an historic event; the USS Constitution was in the harbor with firefighters and police from the recent Boston Marathon as invited passengers. The ship from the War of 1812, nicknamed "Old Ironsides"
rarely goes out and security is very high when she does.

Later we went onboard Old Ironsides, kept in tiptop shape by navy personnel. I couldn't believe we were on the actual ship; it was a great experience.

What a beautiful view from the harbor taxi!

We made it to Quincy Market, a fun place. We brought gourmet tuna sandwiches along with us and had a nice lunch near Rose Kennedy's new Park.

This is the old publishing House where Alcott, Hawthorne and other authors of the day brought their manuscripts.

Riding home on the harbor taxi. Boston was great to visit.

On another day we drove west across New Hampshire; we stopped for a picnic at Sunapee Lake. We thought it felt like being inside a postcard - too perfect.

The only National Park in New Hampshire is Saint GAUDENS to celebrate a great sculptor. this is the studio. We thought the setting was amazing.

We had a tour inside the home with a very friendly Ranger.

This is the house, made from an historic old tavern.

Our RV friends prepared a lovely meal for the last night in New Hampshire.

Bye Ashley, Come back soon for more T@b travels!

  1. Usonian house, what a great idea! No place to store any junk! Haha. So nice to see Ashley. I love Boston, and especially Old Ironsides. How about those sleeping conditions!

  2. I never knew there was a word for that kind of house, and after he pushed that particular envelope, everyone was on board! FLW was like that in so many of his designs.

I loved the post card-esque photos.
