Rockland's granite pier

The Rockland Breakwater was built with over 700,000 tons of granite at a price of $750,000 and took almost two decades to complete (1881-1899). It was built because in the 1850's, several big storms from the northeast caused an extreme amount of damage to the inner parts of Rockland Harbor.

Intrepid Adelle.

You visit the lighthouse by walking across the mammoth granite blocks that make up the breakwater. The granite blocks were cut to fit and were placed end-to-end in water up to 70 feet deep traversing 7/8th of a mile to the end of the granite pier.

Phew, now that the strenuous walk is over, it's time to eat at charming Cafe Miranda in downtown Rockland.

We order the delicious special, Deconstructed Nachos.

I'm not kidding! Here's proof. What a fun menu.

  1. Those nachos deconstructed make me want to visit Rockland just for that! The menu is so funny! What do you think they meant by that "copywrite" comment?

  2. The granite breakwater is fantastic. It reminds me of the French Lieutenant's Woman. I would have liked to walk on it all the way out to the light house. What a project that must have been to build.
