It is great to be in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We are parked about 10 miles north of the City in Bedford. All of a sudden the weather has turned hot and humid, in the middle 90s and will stay like this through the weekend.
Old Halifax is built up a hill from the harbor. We bought tickets for the Halifax TATTOO, last day of a week's run this coming Sunday at 2:30, least expensive seats $37. This is one show where sitting high up really works with the large numbers of people onstage.
While the others had a pint at nearby Cheers, I ate lunch, burger & fries. Our waiter who is from nearby St. John, New Bruswick, is a college student majoring in business from one of the four Colleges nearby.
This is the view down the hill to the harbor near where we bought tickets.
Down the hill at the harbor a very nice boardwalk with shops continues for about two miles; from it I took this photo.
Then I turned around to photograph my car at a harbor front Cunard parking lot for $3/hr. nice view from the parking lot!
A few streets up is the Old Burying Ground with this monument to soldiers lost in foreign wars including the War of 1812.
I went on a bike ride to Point Pleasant, the undeveloped southern tip of the island.
The bike is parked against an old tower fortification with a view out to the harbor.
This is a view of the Prince of Wales Martello Tower, one of the best examples of a structure associated with the defence of the British naval station of Halifax against possible French invasion. As the first Martello Tower in the British Empire, this structure was a pioneer in the development of standardized Martello tower design which was adopted by the British military in 1804.
I read about a public swimming pool in Bedford so drove over to check it out. Wow, what a view.
There are two Costcos in this area. They are just like home except for the menu. They have swirls in a waffle cone
and a Montreal smoked meat sandwich. But the most interesting is the Poutine with gravy. Take a plate of French fries, add crumbled Gouda cheese from Montreal, then pour gravy over the top.
I think I'll give it a pass.
While getting my car aligned at Canadian Tire I had a look around the sporting goods department in case I take up ice hockey in the future. New skates?
and a new hockey stick.
In the Bedford Summerside shopping mall was a bookstore with all the Jack Reacher books.
And in the laundromat was a (not very good, but recognizable) copy of the Renoir I had visited at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC a few weeks back.
On a drive to Chester there was a free public swimming pool right on the bay! This town is where rich Halifax as well as Americans have summer homes. The ambience is 19th century.
An old tower fortification--ha!
ReplyDeleteI liked all the swimming pools by the water the best. And I like that you've seen the original painting! Nice attempt to dress up the laundromat, don't ya think?
Isn't it odd when you walk by a painting you've seen in real life? There's a poster of a Matisse we saw at the Hermitage hanging in the hallway of the school where I work. The first time I walked by it I realized I had seen it in person. It made me feel so happy! I love that Renoir.
ReplyDeleteI love all the swimming pools close the water. Beautiful weather! All that AND the comfort of Costco!
