The 80 mile loop is a road in the shape of a Santa stocking winding through miles of bayous, marshland and shores along the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the oldest scenic byways in America, one of 15 designated by the Federal Highway Administration. It is a beautiful and natural place.
This place is heaven for a naturalist and even the casual sightseeing tourist: 400 species of birds, 35 species of amphibians and reptiles, 132 species of fish, and 26 species of mammals.
These houses are in Holly Beach, right on the Gulf.
I wonder what those stilts are for? Going east along the shoreline the pavement was about 60 feet from the waves. Home insurance is reduced for those raised houses.
Along the way are sights to inspire the watercolor artist.
The small town of Creole at the bottom of the loop.
Headed north on the byway is another roadside scene. I saw plenty of birds but was unable to photograph them.
