In Buffalo's Forest Lawn Cemetery is the Blue Sky Mausoleum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Wright had a very good friend, Darwin Martin, who brought the architect many commissions including the Graycliff house and this Mausoleum.
The Graycliff House is a summer place designed for Martin's wife, Isabel. It is situated on a limestone cliff twenty miles south of the City overlooking Lake Erie across which one may see Buffalo.
The rock wall is part of the plan to keep the eye viewing the property horizontally.
Through the floor level windows you see Lake Erie.
The pond echoes Lake Erie. There is a small waterfall.
No photography is allowed indoors.
The house is constantly being restored. Like other FLW houses, lots of dollars are needed for the remaining restoration.
The entry is a confined area with low porch, but when stepping through the door the space expands into a spacious, naturally-lit space.
This stairway was once connected by a bridge to the house's property. The bridge will be restored one day.
The family lost their fortune in the Crash of 1929 and Isabel moved into the chauffeur's apartment
over the garage.
Our guide, a retired account executive with the IRS, was very knowledgable about the history and architecture. She didn't know how much she would enjoy her new volunteer job.
