Opened in 1929, this lavish former movie palace with 4,678 seats was originally planned as part of a large Shrine Temple.
Decorated in Moorish style, the auditorium resembles an Arabian courtyard. There is an interior Egyptian ballroom designed after a temple for Ramses II at Karnak.
The ballroom became Atlanta's most popular dancehall in the big band era of the 1940s.
I am waiting outside with about 50 people for the Saturday morning tour at 10 a.m.
