With its two stations and five outbuildings, Chicamacomico (pronounced chik a ma COM i co) is the most complete site of remaining life-saving stations in North Carolina. It is located on Hatteras Island in the village of Rodanthe on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
We attended a "Chief's Indoctrination" Drill at 10:30 a.m.
The Beach Apparatus Drill also known as the Breeches Buoy Reenactment was performed for the first time by active-duty Coast Guardsmen who were in the process of going tthrough an initiation of events to prepare them for being promoted to the rank of Chief.
The drill is a complicated exercise showing how people were rescued from sinking ships before the advent of helicopter-rescue and other modern modes of rescue.
When a rope is shot over the mast of the sinking ship, it unravels from this "spool" very fast that keeps it from tangling.
View of the Station kitchen when it was active.
Special rockers for viewing the video of old-timers sharing their stories.
