Wind, sand, and a dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where, after four years of experimentation, they achieved the first successful airplane flights in 1903. With courage and perseverance, these self-taught engineers relied on teamwork and application of the scientific process. What they achieved changed the world forever.
The first flight lasted 12 seconds and is immortalized in a famous photograph taken by the member of a lifesaving crew who had come that day to help push the plane to the top of the hill.
This place is an inspiring, big spread-out memorial that celebrates humans figuring out how to fly.
The Wright Brothers success is an amazing story of American self-reliance, focus and tenacity.
And it happened on the Outer Banks.
