Morehead City & Beaufort

Morehead City Library had the nicest reading room. It felt like sitting in my own house.

It was National Library Week and was celebrated with cupcakes and punch and homemade bookmarks made by the librarians. I was transported back to memories of my1950s small town library, and enjoyed it so much.

This is a fascinating historical graveyard in Beaufort, South Carolina called The Old Burying Ground.

The stones are so old many are impossible to read. There is a little pamphlet in a box by the entry way to tell about some of the most interesting history.

This grave is flooded with toys and childlike mementos for a little girl who died at sea 3 centuries ago. Her papa had promised that she would come home so they put her in a barrel of rum at sea so she could arrive home in Beaufort intact.

I learned that flags spell words. These flags spell "Beaufort".

Another boat ride in an old lifeboat given by an enthusiastic Captain who explained history and weather and all kinds of interesting facts.

I am on the edge of the earth at Cape Lookout. I enjoyed a poetic film at the Visitor's Center narrated by Meryl Streep. It captured the remarkablel beauty of these shifting outer banks.

  1. I love that photo of the library. I pinned it to my Pinterest page! The graveyard reminds me of Tarrytown. Remember? That was also a really old one, c. 1600s, Dutch if I recall. Thanks for sharing!
