Sweet Savannah

March 24, 2013

Established in 1733, the city of Savannah was the colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport.

But those facts I may forget. The impressions of a beautiful, historic city I will remember.

This first picture is just outside the city -- entrance to an old plantation that has long ago burned.

Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District and 22 parklike squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated by the U.S. government in 1966). Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by founder James Oglethorpe. Remember him?

The parklike squares were supposed to be for soldier trainining and practice marching, but eventually  parks, fountains, and monuments took their place. Now there are 22 lovely parks in old Savannah.

Walking along the historic riverfront.

Johnny Mercer, song writer, posed for a picture with us.

Touring the home of the founder of the Girl Scouts was fun.

Here is one of those beautiful park squares that invite you to linger.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

I spent an inspiring afternoon inside the Telfair Art Museum.

  2. Wouldn't that be funny if a decendant from Oglethorpe's original poor peoples colony was the one to design this place?
